The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Monday as the death toll rose to 100, with two more deaths reported in Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts over the past 24 hours.

According to the latest flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, nearly 1.4 lakh people remain affected across seven districts. Around 456 villages are inundated, while 11,933 hectares of cropland have been damaged.

The authorities continue to monitor the situation as several parts of the state remain affected by flooding and waterlogging. Guwahati has also reported waterlogging in multiple areas, while the India Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall in catchment areas.

Relief and rehabilitation

The state government has set up 252 relief camps and 2,050 relief distribution centres to support affected communities, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The government has also begun preparations for a door-to-door assessment of flood damage in four of the worst-hit districts — Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo and Golaghat. The assessment, scheduled to continue until August 30, will cover affected households and assess the assistance required for rehabilitation.

Survey teams have been instructed to photograph damaged properties and upload details through a dedicated mobile application. The findings will subsequently be verified with affected families.

The government expects to estimate the funds required for permanent rehabilitation by September 10, following which financial assistance will be provided under existing norms.

Schools reopen

Schools across Assam reopened on Monday, although students from institutions severely damaged by floods will temporarily attend nearby schools.

The government has released Rs 2 lakh each to affected schools in the worst-hit districts for cleaning and repair work.

With more rain forecast, authorities remain on alert and continue to monitor water levels and the situation in flood-affected areas.
