The flood situation in Assam has worsened significantly following heavy rainfall over the past few days, leading to a rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra River.
According to data from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the death toll has now reached 25 after one more person lost his life in the calamity on Wednesday.
The incessant rains have affected over two lakh people across eight districts and inundated 5055.6 hectares of agricultural land.
The districts currently submerged in floodwaters include Cachar, Karimganj, Morigaon, Hojai, Nagaon, Dima Hasao, Hailakandi, and West Karbi Anglong. A total of 19 revenue circles in these districts are affected.
In Cachar, the five impacted revenue circles are Silchar, Katigara, Udharband, Laxmipur, and Sonai. Dima Hasao has one affected revenue circle, Haflong, while Hailakandi’s affected circles are Algapur and Hailakandi.
Hojai has three affected circles: Dobka, Hojai, and Lanka. West Karbi Anglong’s Dongkamukam, Karimganj’s Patharkandi and Nilambazar, Morigaon’s Morigaon and Mayang, and Nagaon’s Raha, Kampur, and Nagaon revenue circles are also facing severe flooding.
The ASDMA’s data indicates that a total of 2,46,813 people in these eight districts are grappling with the flood's impact.
This includes 98,268 men, 81,148 women, and 67,397 children. To accommodate the displaced, 133 shelter camps have been established across the affected districts.
Cachar hosts 65 of these camps, Dima Hasao and Hailakandi have two each, Hojai has 26, West Karbi Anglong three, Morigaon two, and Nagaon 33.
The floods have also caused extensive damage to livestock, with 32,246 animals affected. This figure includes 15,282 large breeds, 9,707 small breeds, and 7,257 poultry birds.
As rescue and relief operations continue, the authorities are working to provide essential supplies and support to the affected population.
