Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed on Monday, July 1 that the flood situation in Assam has deteriorated overnight. 

 

The Brahmaputra River is currently flowing above the danger mark at Neamatighat and Tezpur, with several other rivers also breaching danger levels in various areas.

 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for districts including Nalbari, Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, and Tinsukia, predicting a critical situation in the next 3-4 days.

 

The ongoing floods have affected 14 districts, 41 revenue circles, and 698 villages, impacting approximately 2.74 lakh people.

 

The NHPC (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) released 409 cubic metres of excess water, leading to the displacement of 21,000 people in North Lakhimpur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Chief Minister Sarma to discuss the escalating flood situation in Assam.

 

The conversation focused on the state's second wave of floods this year, primarily triggered by heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh and upper Assam.

 

During the conversation, Sarma briefed the Prime Minister on the current flood conditions and outlined the relief measures initiated by the state government.

 

The floods have disrupted normal life across numerous districts, posing significant challenges for residents and authorities alike.

 

"I informed him about Assam experiencing a second wave of floods this year due to heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and parts of upper Assam. I also apprised him of the relief measures taken by the state government," Sarma tweeted.

 

 

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah called me and assured of all help to deal with the situation,” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

 

The NDRF and Army will be on standby to deal with any emergency, he said.

"All Ministers, MLAs and officials have been asked to closely monitor the situation,” he added.

Altogether 2,70,628 people in 14 districts, including Brahmaputra and Barak valleys, are reeling under the deluge, officials said.
