In a significant boost to traditional healthcare in Assam, Union AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone for the state's second ayurvedic college at Dudhnoi in Goalpara district on Monday.

This marks a landmark moment, as Assam receives its second ayurvedic college after a gap of 76 years. Highlighting the state's rich heritage in traditional medicine, Sonowal lamented its neglect, particularly during the previous Congress regime. He credited the current BJP-led government for recognizing and promoting this unique facet of Assamese healthcare.

The new college, estimated to cost Rs 70 crore, will boast an intake capacity of 100 students for the undergraduate Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) program.

The release also hinted at the potential introduction of postgraduate courses in the future. Additionally, the college will house a herbal garden and a dedicated unit for manufacturing ayurvedic medicines, promoting self-sufficiency and potentially fostering local entrepreneurship.

Furthermore, Sonowal virtually laid the foundation stones for two 50-bed integrated AYUSH hospitals in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts.

These facilities, constructed with an investment of Rs 30 crore each, aim to bolster the state's healthcare infrastructure by providing accessible and comprehensive medical care, integrating both modern and traditional medicinal practices.

This initiative by the central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscores a commitment to build a robust and holistic healthcare system for the nation, leveraging the strengths of both established and traditional healing methods.
