The Assam government has set a target of producing 10 lakh litres of milk every day as part of a major push to strengthen the dairy sector, improve rural livelihoods and reduce the state's dependence on milk supplies from other states.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the goal on Thursday, reaffirming the government's commitment to expanding the dairy industry, which he described as a key pillar of Assam's rural economy.

“Every glass of milk nourishes a family and strengthens the rural economy,” Sarma said in a post on X, highlighting the sector's role in improving household nutrition and generating income.

He said the government is extending subsidies to more than 25,000 dairy farmers to boost productivity, increase earnings and build a stronger dairy ecosystem.

“Our mission is to produce 10 lakh litres of milk every day,” the Chief Minister added.

To achieve the target, the government has rolled out measures including financial assistance, scientific breeding programmes, improved livestock management and expanded veterinary services. Farmers are also being encouraged to adopt modern dairy practices and invest in quality cattle.

Officials said the initiative would help Assam become more self-reliant in milk production while creating additional income opportunities, particularly for small and marginal farmers. Government interventions are also focused on improving fodder availability, strengthening milk collection networks and promoting organised dairy farming.

According to officials, expanding milk production is expected to generate employment across the dairy value chain, including processing, transportation and marketing, while improving nutritional security.

The daily production target forms part of the state's broader strategy to strengthen agriculture and allied sectors, with dairy, fisheries and animal husbandry identified as key drivers of rural economic growth and sustainable employment.
