The Assam governemnt has announced a major employment drive titled “Mission 2 Lakh Govt Jobs”, aiming to provide two lakh government jobs over the next five years as part of its broader commitment to youth employment and administrative expansion across departments and allied institutions.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the initiative reflects the government’s sustained focus on job creation and administrative strengthening. Under the programme, vacancies will be mapped across departments, autonomous bodies, semi-government organisations, missions, societies, colleges and universities to prepare a structured recruitment roadmap.
In the first Cabinet meeting of the current government, it was decided to constitute a task force under the Chief Secretary of the Assam government to examine all aspects and prepare a detailed report for the implementation of the two lakh job promise. The task force has been mandated to submit its report within three months.
“There’s no time to rest in our quest to deliver on our promises. My team is already at work to identify vacancies, create the roadmap, map out departments and bodies and chalk out the time frame to deliver on the commitment of 2 lakh Govt jobs,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
A review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota on May 27 examined the operationalisation of the task force and the broader framework for execution. Discussions focused on mapping existing and anticipated vacancies, analysing retirement trends, identifying direct recruitment posts, and streamlining recruitment processes to ensure transparency and timely appointments.

The meeting also deliberated on improving manpower availability in remote and difficult areas through policy interventions and incentives, alongside strengthening recruitment mechanisms across departments.
Alongside direct recruitment, the government also discussed promoting entrepreneurship and self-employment initiatives through schemes such as the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan (CMAAA) and allied programmes, as part of a parallel strategy to boost livelihood opportunities.
Further discussions included preparation of annual employment targets, department-wise projections, and the creation of robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure structured implementation of the employment roadmap over the five-year period.
According to official data, more than 1.64 lakh recruitments have already been completed in the previous tenure of the government through the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE) and other departmental hiring processes.
The Chief Secretary has directed all departments to conduct detailed internal assessments and submit actionable inputs to help frame the comprehensive five-year employment roadmap.
The initiative is being positioned as one of the state’s largest coordinated recruitment exercises, aimed at addressing unemployment while strengthening public service delivery across sectors.
