In a significant stride towards energy efficiency, Assam has saved Rs 33.75 crore on electricity costs in the past nine months, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The savings have been attributed to the state government’s implementation of smart meters and solar-powered systems across various government offices.
Speaking to the media, Sarma highlighted the role of smart meters in curbing unnecessary electricity usage.
"We replaced manual meters with smart meters in all government offices. These meters are programmed to automatically switch off electricity when offices close, such as at 6 pm. This automation, similar to how streetlights are programmed to turn off in the morning, wasn’t possible with manual meters. For instance, in schools, electricity now shuts off automatically at 4 pm," the Chief Minister explained.
The move forms part of a broader effort to introduce energy-efficient practices in government-run establishments. Sarma also pointed to the increased focus on individual responsibility regarding energy consumption. "Ministers and officials now pay their own electricity bills. Personally, I pay a bill of Rs 60,000," he stated.
In addition to the smart meters, the installation of solar lights at Janata Bhawan, the state’s administrative complex, has contributed to substantial savings. The Chief Minister noted that the initiative has reduced electricity costs by Rs 80 lakh.
"We have achieved substantial savings in energy expenses for the state," Sarma added, reaffirming the government's commitment to sustainable and efficient energy use.
