The Assam government on Thursday launched the third edition of its flagship poverty alleviation scheme, 'Orunodoi', reaching a record 37.2 lakh beneficiaries.
This direct cash transfer initiative has grown significantly from the previous edition, which had 24.6 lakh recipients, adding 12.5 lakh more to its ranks.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the process of distributing Orunodoi Cards to new beneficiaries at a programme in Guwahati.
The scheme, aimed at empowering women in poor households, will provide ₹1,250 monthly, deposited directly into their bank accounts on the 10th of each month.
With the launch of 'Orunodoi 3.0', the state government has decided to phase out the previous versions of the scheme, 'Orunodoi 1.0' and 'Orunodoi 2.0', without transferring legacy data.
The fresh edition seeks to enhance the accuracy of information and improve its implementation standards.
A government statement clarified that while transitioning to the new edition, district officials will ensure that eligible beneficiaries from earlier editions are not removed without valid reasons, ensuring fairness in the process.
The 'Orunodoi' scheme, first launched on 1 December 2020, has rapidly expanded its scope over time.
Its second edition, unveiled on 14 December 2022, brought in additional beneficiaries, and this latest version marks the scheme's largest expansion to date.
