Assam showcased the terracotta craft tradition of Asharikandi village in Dhubri district at the Republic Day parade on Kartavya Path on Monday, drawing praise from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who described the tableau as a moment celebrating the state’s “rich culture”.

The Assam tableau, themed Aatmanirbhar Bharat, depicted Asharikandi, recognised as India’s largest cluster of traditional Assamese terracotta artisans. For more than a century, generations of artisan families in the village have preserved clay craftsmanship marked by refined aesthetics, cultural depth and livelihood sustainability.

Reacting to the display, Sarma wrote on X: “A for Assam at Kartavya Path! From coming last to leading first, our tableau proudly led the procession this Republic Day. A moment that celebrates Assam's rich culture, Asharikandi heritage and its place at the forefront of Bharat's growth story.”

The front of the tableau featured a large terracotta doll holding earthen lamps arranged in a circular pattern, forming the visual centrepiece. The tractor section was adorned with bamboo fencing, symbolising Assam’s bamboo heritage and its role in the rural economy and sustainable development.

Designed as a Moyurponkhi boat, the trailer evoked Assam’s riverine identity. Artisans were depicted shaping Hiramati (clay) into figures of gods and goddesses, highlighting the creative process and spiritual essence of the craft.

A traditional pall (sail canvas) at the rear reinforced the authenticity of the boat and recalled the historic waterways that shaped Assam’s culture and trade.

Women artisans dressed in traditional Mekhela Chador accompanied the tableau, moving rhythmically while singing verses expressing pride in their land and creations. The performance reflected a community whose heritage-based craftsmanship is gaining wider recognition and symbolised Asharikandi’s journey towards self-reliance.

President Droupadi Murmu presided over the Republic Day celebrations on Kartavya Path, with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attending as chief guests.
