Assam and Nagaland on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate oil and natural gas exploration in hydrocarbon-rich areas along their shared boundary, marking a significant step towards economic cooperation and resource development in the Northeast.
Officials said the agreement aims to unlock the energy potential of regions that have remained largely unexplored for decades due to longstanding boundary-related issues between the two neighbouring states.
The pact is expected to create a framework for hydrocarbon exploration and production in border areas while strengthening cooperation between the two state governments. It is also seen as a major initiative to promote economic growth, attract investment and generate employment opportunities in the region.
According to officials, the agreement aligns with the Centre's broader vision of cooperative federalism and efforts to enhance domestic energy production. The initiative is expected to contribute to India's objective of reducing dependence on imported energy by encouraging the exploration and utilisation of indigenous hydrocarbon resources.

The signing ceremony assumes added significance with Union Home Minister Amit Shah associated with the initiative, underlining the Centre's support for collaborative development projects in the Northeast.
Observers believe the agreement could help create a more conducive environment for investment and accelerate oil and gas exploration activities in the border belt. The framework is also expected to encourage participation from public and private sector energy companies interested in exploring the region's untapped reserves.
Apart from its economic implications, the pact is being viewed as an important confidence-building measure between Assam and Nagaland, which have experienced periodic tensions over territorial disputes in the past.
Sources familiar with the development said the agreement may include provisions relating to collaborative exploration, revenue-sharing mechanisms, security arrangements and administrative coordination for project implementation.
Officials expressed optimism that the initiative would not only strengthen inter-state cooperation but also support infrastructure development, create jobs and boost economic activity in surrounding areas.
With energy security emerging as a key national priority, the Assam-Nagaland hydrocarbon exploration pact is expected to contribute to both regional development and the country's long-term energy goals.
