The united opposition in Assam on Sunday decided to persist with their alliance until the 2026 assembly elections, vowing to contest all elections over the next two years as a unified bloc, party leaders revealed.
The United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA), initially comprising 16 parties in alignment with the INDIA bloc, convened a crucial meeting where several strategic decisions were taken to bolster their coalition. The alliance welcomed two new parties, raising the total to 18.
“All parties resolved to work unitedly until the 2026 assembly elections. Each party will set aside its own interests to defeat the BJP,” stated Congress spokesperson Bedabrat Bora.
Bora highlighted that the bloc’s forthcoming major test will be the panchayat elections at the year’s end.
Isfaqur Rahman, a central committee member of CPI(M), emphasised that the meeting focused on addressing internal differences and enhancing coordination among member parties.
“We committed to maintaining unity until the assembly elections and intensifying our efforts. For by-elections, we will nominate common candidates and collaborate to ensure their victory,” Rahman said.
The UOFA also criticised the state government for its failure to adequately highlight the flood and erosion issues to the Centre, resulting in the lack of concrete measures in the Union Budget, Rahman added.
UOFA includes Congress, TMC, AAP, Raijor Dal, AJP, CPI(M), CPI, AIFB, CPI(ML), Jatiya Dal-Asom (U), Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), Samajwadi Party, Purbancholio Lok Parishad (PLP), RJD, Karbi Anglong-based All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC), Kamatapur Front, and Sonowal Kachari Gana Mancha.
