In the third phase of a state-wide crackdown on child marriage, Assam police arrested 416 individuals and registered 335 cases between the night of December 21 and 22.
The operation forms part of the Assam government’s ongoing efforts to combat the social evil of child marriage.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a tweet, reaffirmed the state government's commitment to eradicating the practice.
"We will continue to take bold steps to end this social evil!" he declared. He further elaborated on the scope of the recent operation, saying, "In Phase 3 operations launched on the night of Dec 21-22, 416 arrests were made and 335 cases registered. The arrested individuals will be produced in court today."
The police detained 68 individuals in Dhubri on December 22 for their involvement in facilitating and organising child marriages. These arrests were made in areas such as College TOP, Bazar TOP, Dharmasala, Soulmari, Gauripur, Golakganj, Tamarhat, and Bilasipara.
The crackdown is part of a broader campaign launched by the state government to address the illegal practice of underage marriages, which has long been a significant concern in Assam.
The government is determined to tackle the issue head-on, with a strong focus on ensuring accountability and justice for those involved in such illegal practices.
