Four personnel of the Chhattisgarh Police, including an inspector, were detained and questioned by Assam Police in Guwahati over allegations of bribery linked to a cybercrime investigation, officials said on Wednesday.
A case was registered against the four-member Raipur Police team at Dispur Police Station after complaints surfaced that the personnel had allegedly demanded and accepted bribes from accused persons they had detained during the probe.
According to a senior officer, the team had arrived in Guwahati on Sunday in connection with a cybercrime case registered in Chhattisgarh. Acting on leads, they first arrested one accused from Bihar and subsequently apprehended three more individuals, also from Bihar, in Guwahati on Monday.
The controversy emerged after two of the accused alleged that they were released by the visiting police personnel upon payment of bribes. The third accused, they claimed, was kept in custody as the remaining amount was yet to be paid.
“We received a complaint from the two released accused regarding the matter. Based on that, we initiated action and conducted an operation. The entire team was picked up and brought to Dispur Police Station last night,” the officer said.

Following the complaint, Guwahati Police detained the team on Tuesday night and carried out preliminary questioning. An FIR was subsequently registered under bailable sections.
Police officials said the four personnel, comprising an inspector, a head constable and two constables—were later allowed to leave after being served notices, directing them to appear again for further questioning.
“We have served notices to them and asked them to appear before us again today for further action,” the officer added.
The lone accused in the cybercrime case, who had remained in custody, has since been released on a personal recognisance (PR) bond.
Sources indicated that the Chhattisgarh Police team has already returned to Dispur Police Station for another round of questioning as the inquiry progresses. Further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
