Assam has recorded a 28 per cent decline in crime cases over the past two years, with total registered cases falling to 49,552 in 2024 from 68,937 in 2022, Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said on Friday, citing data from the Crime in India 2024 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The figures, shared by the minister in a post on X, show a steady drop in crime, with 64,959 cases recorded in 2023 before declining further in 2024. He described the trend as one of the sharpest reductions in crime rates in the country.
According to the NCRB data cited by him, Assam’s crime rate currently stands at 137 cases per lakh population, significantly lower than the national average of 418, indicating an improvement in overall law and order indicators.

The report also points to a rise in the state’s charge-sheeting rate, which increased to 67.1 per cent in 2024 from below 50 per cent in previous years. Officials said the improvement reflects faster investigation processes and stronger legal follow-up in criminal cases.
Mallabaruah said the decline in crime is the result of sustained governance measures, strengthened policing systems and coordinated efforts across departments to maintain peace and stability.
He added that Assam, which had faced prolonged insurgency and law-and-order challenges in the past, is now transitioning towards a phase focused on peace, economic growth and attracting investment.
The minister maintained that continued focus on policing reforms and development initiatives would further consolidate the gains made in improving public safety across the state.
