Authorities have announced repolling in 43 polling booths across five districts of Assam following reports of irregularities during the first phase of the panchayat elections held on Friday. The repoll will be conducted on May 4, according to officials from the State Election Commission.
Of the 43 affected booths, the majority — 31 — are located in Hailakandi district. The rest are distributed across Sribhumi (8 booths), Lakhimpur (2), and one booth each in Golaghat and Majuli districts.
The first phase of polling took place in 12,916 booths across 14 districts, with over 89.59 lakh eligible voters. The overall voter turnout stood at 70.2 per cent.
Majuli recorded the highest turnout at 80.02 per cent, while Sonitpur registered the lowest at 61 per cent.
Voting began at 7:30 am and officially concluded at 4:30 pm. However, polling continued late into the night in some areas to accommodate voters who had entered the booths before the deadline.
While the election process remained mostly peaceful, minor incidents of violence were reported from Cachar district.
The second phase of polling is scheduled for May 7, with vote counting set to take place on May 11.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance has already secured a strong foothold, having won 325 out of 348 uncontested seats in the zila and anchalik parishads, according to the State Election Commission.
Panchayat elections are being held in 28 districts of Assam. The remaining seven districts fall under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and are governed by autonomous councils.
