Following last year’s success in securing a Guinness World Record for the “largest Bihu dance in a single venue,” Assam is now gearing up to attempt another record-breaking feat with a Jhumur performance involving 8,000 artists.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the ambitious plan on Thursday, aiming to boost the popularity of Jhumur, a traditional art form practiced by the state’s tea tribes.
The collective Jhumur performance is scheduled for November at the Sarusajai Stadium, the same venue where the record-breaking Bihu dance took place with 11,298 participants. Sarma outlined that artists from 800 tea estates across Assam will participate, with each estate contributing between 80 to 120 performers.
While the chief minister emphasized that the primary focus of the event is on showcasing Jhumur rather than breaking records, he acknowledged the possibility of qualifying for multiple records in the Guinness World Records.
“We are not linking the performance to any record; it will simply be a collective performance,” he stated.
Sarma revealed that the song and video for the Jhumur performance have already been recorded and will be released soon.
He also mentioned that the details of the event were thoroughly discussed at a recent conference for district commissioners, who have been instructed to apply the insights gained from last year’s Bihu record.
