In an effort to enhance Assam's tea tourism, the state government has unveiled a substantial scheme to provide financial aid to selected tea gardens.

Marking the bicentenary of Assam Tea, the initiative aims to transform these estates into major tourist attractions, drawing visitors from around the globe.

Under the new scheme, tea gardens meeting specific criteria will receive up to ₹2 crore each for infrastructural improvements.

This funding is part of a broader strategy to develop modern amenities and upgrade facilities, making these gardens appealing destinations for international tourists.

The government has earmarked 24 tea gardens for this financial assistance, focusing on enhancing tourist amenities and encouraging private sector involvement in tea tourism.

The initiative will promote activities such as tea leaf plucking, nature walks, trekking, and golfing to diversify the tourist experience and showcase the serene beauty of Assam’s lush tea estates.

A critical aspect of the scheme is fostering coordination among tea industry stakeholders and state tourism operators to build a robust tea tourism industry.

This approach aims to highlight the rich cultural and socio-economic heritage of Assam’s tea tribes, offering visitors insights into the region’s unique traditions and lifestyle.

Earlier this month, the Tourism Department issued sanction letters to 34 tea gardens interested in developing their tourism infrastructure.

Tourism Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah emphasised Assam's untapped potential for tea tourism, pointing out that heritage bungalows and historic golf courses within tea gardens have yet to be fully marketed.

“Assam’s tea gardens host the oldest golf course in Asia,” Mallabaruah noted, spotlighting the need for effective promotion to attract tourists.

The initiative represents a strategic push to capitalise on Assam's tea heritage and develop it into a major tourist draw, enhancing the state's appeal as a travel destination and supporting local economies through increased visitor engagement.
