The Assam government is set to file a case against Mahbabul Haque, Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), for allegedly obtaining an OBC certificate fraudulently from Karimganj district 32 years ago, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday.
Sarma stated that Haque had acquired the OBC certificate in 1992, claiming to belong to an Other Backward Class.
However, following a complaint in the same year, the certificate was cancelled in August 1996 after it was found that Haque did not belong to any community eligible for OBC status.
“The district commissioner of Karimganj should have initiated proceedings against him back then. Although it wasn’t done, we will now file an FIR against Haque,” Sarma said.
Earlier this month, Sarma had accused Haque and USTM of contributing to 'flood jihad' in Guwahati, alleging that the university's activities on its hilltop campus were causing severe waterlogging in the city.
USTM, located on a hill adjacent to Guwahati, has been blamed for damaging the hills, exacerbating the flooding issues.
