Assam on Friday launched a major urban infrastructure push under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, rolling out 58 projects across the state with an investment of more than Rs 861 crore aimed at strengthening water supply systems, sanitation networks and urban civic services.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the initiative marks a significant step towards building a “stronger urban Assam” and improving the quality of life in towns and cities through planned development and upgraded public utilities.
Sharing details on social media platform X on May 23, Sarma said the projects focus on expanding access to clean drinking water, strengthening sewerage systems and restoring urban water bodies as part of broader civic works.
“A stronger urban Assam is taking shape,” Sarma wrote, underlining that the AMRUT 2.0 interventions are designed to align infrastructure development with the growing needs of urban populations across the state.

According to the state government, the scheme prioritises reliable water supply, improved sanitation coverage and modern civic amenities in multiple urban centres. The projects are also expected to improve public health standards, strengthen civic infrastructure and support sustainable urban growth in rapidly expanding towns.
Officials said the programme reflects Assam’s continued emphasis on sustainable urban development under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban
Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 framework, which targets cleaner surroundings and upgraded public infrastructure.
The government said the scheme forms part of a broader effort to modernise urban services and ensure better civic amenities for residents across Assam as urbanisation continues to expand in the state.
