Lok Sabha MP Engineer Rashid has been transferred to Jail No. 1 in Delhi’s Tihar Jail complex following an alleged attack on him inside the jail premises recently.
His party, the J&K Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), confirmed that the MP from north Kashmir’s Baramulla constituency was moved to another block after the incident raised serious security concerns.
Rashid had previously raised concerns about a possible attack, but considering the claim to be unfounded, his request was rejected, party officials claimed.
A party spokesperson said that Rashid, who has been detained in Tihar, was allegedly attacked by some inmates during a routine interaction period. The party, “deeply disturbed” by the reports, demanded an independent inquiry into the alleged incident. “This is not just about one individual. It’s about custodial safety and the rights of prisoners under law,” it said.
Rashid was elected as an Independent MP from Baramulla in the 2024 parliamentary elections while in custody. He defeated Omar Abdullah by more than 2 lakh votes, surprising many who had predicted Omar’s win.
