At least 16 people have lost their lives and several others have been left with serious injuries following a devastating explosion at a firecracker factory in Kattanarpatti, Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu. The facility, which is reportedly owned by former Govindhanallur Panchayat President Muthumanickam, was levelled by the force of the blast, which reduced three out of four production rooms to piles of rubble.
At the time of the incident, over 30 labourers were working inside the factory. Early reports suggest the explosion originated in an area intended for the storage of non-hazardous materials, but the impact was significantly worsened by overcrowding. Local officials said that more than 10 workers were confined to a single room when the blast occurred, hampering their ability to escape.
Fire and rescue services from Sattur, Virudhunagar, and Sivakasi arrived promptly to battle the resulting blaze and extract survivors from the debris. Those rescued were rushed to nearby hospitals.
The tragedy has prompted a swift political response. Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his profound sorrow and immediately asked senior ministers KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu to go to the site to oversee the relief operations. The Chief Minister confirmed he has been in direct contact with the District Collector to ensure that all survivors and bereaved families receive the necessary support and medical care.
Several leaders shared their grief as news of the scale of the disaster emerged. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi both issued statements describing the accident as "deeply distressing" and offered their condolences to those who have lost loved ones. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his sadness, stating that his thoughts and prayers were with the families of the deceased and those currently fighting for recovery in hospital. Investigations into the exact cause of the ignition and any potential safety breaches at the facility are expected to follow.
