A court here on Thursday sent the man who allegedly tried to assassinate National Conference president Farooq Abdullah to five days of police custody for questioning. The accused, 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal, was produced before a city court amid tight security arrangements.
Police sought his custody, saying further interrogation was required to find out the motive behind the attack. They also said it was necessary to verify whether the accused had links with any organisation or individual.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted five days of police remand. It also directed the police to ensure that the accused undergoes a medical check-up every 24 hours.
Earlier in the day, Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi, was taken to a hospital where doctors conducted his medical examination. “I have not done this at the behest of anyone. I have fired at him,” Jamwal told mediapersons.
Farooq Abdullah had a narrow escape on Wednesday night when the accused allegedly opened fire at him from behind while he was going back from a marriage function at Greater Kailash on the outskirts of Jammu.
