An avalanche hit near the Snow Gallery at the north portal of the Atal Tunnel in Lahaul subdivision on Tuesday, blocking National Highway-03 (NH-03).
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) said the avalanche occurred close to the tunnel’s north portal, disrupting traffic on the key highway connecting Lahaul-Spiti with other parts of Himachal Pradesh.
Following the incident, NH-03 was blocked, and road maintenance teams immediately began restoration and clearance work. Further details are awaited.
Earlier, on January 28, the sacred town of Kedarnath in Uttarakhand witnessed extreme winter conditions, with heavy snowfall and severe cold affecting the region.
The Rudraprayag district administration said continuous snowfall in the higher Himalayan areas completely covered the Kedarnath shrine. Officials said around 3 to 4 feet of snow accumulated at the temple, while temperatures dropped to minus 16 degrees Celsius.
Despite the harsh weather, personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Rudraprayag Police carried out continuous patrols in and around the temple and other sensitive locations to ensure safety.
Even amid extreme cold and icy winds, the forces maintained round-the-clock patrols in the temple area and other vulnerable zones.
In view of the possibility of snowfall and avalanches in high-altitude regions, the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) has issued an alert to all districts.
