Authorities in several districts of Jammu and Kashmir have issued avalanche warnings in vulnerable areas and urged local communities to avoid non-essential movement in risky zones until weather improve.

Authorities in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal, South Kashmir’s Anantnag and North Kashmir’s Kupwara districts have issued fresh avalanche warnings after multiple landslides and mudslides forced the closures of several roads across Jammu and Kashmir.

Fresh accumulation of snow along the Mughal Road, Razdan Top, Zojila Pass, and the upper reaches of the Kashmir Valley has disrupted surface traffic.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted erratic weather conditions to prevail in the region over the coming days. It said similar weather conditions are likely to persist in the region until April 10 with occasional improvements.

Officials said intermittent light to moderate rain, along with spells of snowfall in higher reaches accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kilometres per hour, was witnessed till late night.

The MeT Department further said cloudy weather is likely to prevail between April 5 and 7, followed by fresh spells of light rain or snow at scattered locations between April 8 and 10.

Travellers commuting to and from Srinagar are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and are urged to check with officials in the traffic department before undertaking travel along the critical highway connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country.

The MeT Department also urged travellers to remain extra vigilant on critical and vulnerable passes along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway due to the possibility of landslides.
