A 50-year-old Bangladeshi national who travelled to Kolkata with his wife for medical treatment has been reported missing, triggering concern among his family members and prompting an investigation by local police.
The missing man has been identified as Syed Abdullah Zohi, a resident of Chapainawabganj district in Bangladesh. According to family members, Zohi has been untraceable since March 11.
Family sources said Zohi had arrived in Kolkata a few days earlier along with his wife, Masrufa Tasnim, to seek treatment for her health issues. The couple had begun medical consultations at a hospital in Baguiati under the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate and were staying at a hotel in the same area.
According to the family, Zohi left their hotel room on Wednesday and went downstairs, but did not return. After waiting for a long time, his wife attempted to contact him on his mobile phone.
"The phone reportedly rang for a long time before an unidentified person answered. When asked about Zohi’s whereabouts, the caller claimed to be a vegetable vendor and said he had found the phone lying unattended on a motorcycle. He said he answered the call because it had been ringing repeatedly," said a police officer.
Tasnim rushed to the location mentioned by the caller and retrieved the phone, but her husband was nowhere to be found. Following the incident, Tasnim lodged a written complaint at Baguiati Police Station regarding her husband's disappearance.
A relative of the couple, Ripon Mondal, who resides in Kolkata and had arranged their travel and stay in the city, said the family is extremely worried about Zohi’s sudden disappearance.
“I personally made all the arrangements for them. His sudden disappearance has left us deeply concerned. We are in constant touch with the police, who are assisting us in the search,” Mondal said.
He also revealed that the family recently received a suspicious phone call from a person claiming that Zohi had been found in Bardhaman. The callers allegedly demanded ₹2,000, saying they would bring him to Sealdah Railway Station if the money was sent.
Growing suspicious of the claim, Mondal informed the police. After verification, officers determined that the call was a hoax and an apparent attempt to exploit the family’s distress. A senior officer from the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said that efforts are ongoing to locate the missing man.
“We are making continuous efforts to trace the individual. Updates will be shared once we obtain any concrete information,” the officer said.
