The alleged kidnapping of two Bangladeshi nationals in Kolkata’s outskirts has sparked concern, with police rescuing the victims and arresting two accused, including one Bangladeshi citizen, early on Tuesday.
According to police sources, the two victims, identified as Rajiv Laskar and Junaid Miah, had arrived in Kolkata a few days ago with valid visas. They were reportedly planning to travel to Turkey via India and had contacted a man named Achintya Kumar Pal for visa-related assistance.
Investigators said the arrested Bangladeshi national, Humayun Kabir, introduced the two men to Achintya. The victims were then allegedly called to a location on the pretext of completing passport and visa formalities.
Acting on information about the incident, a team from the Technocity police station launched an investigation and conducted a raid at a hotel. The two Bangladeshi nationals were rescued from there.
A case has been registered against Humayun Kabir and Achintya Pal on charges of illegal detention and extortion, and both have been arrested.
Investigators are now probing whether the kidnapping was solely for extortion or linked to a dispute over other financial transactions. Police are also verifying the relationship between Humayun Kabir and the two victims.
According to officials, documents related to financial transactions are being examined, and further arrests may be made if required. The two accused are scheduled to be produced before the Barasat court, where police are expected to seek custody for further interrogation.
