A 34-year-old man allegedly killed three members of his family before committing suicide in Bengaluru on Saturday morning, police said. The accused, identified as Prashanth, reportedly attacked his mother Mangalamma (55), grandmother Nanjamma (65), and brother-in-law Satish (50) with a lethal weapon at their residence in Kottigepalya, under the jurisdiction of the Kamakshipalya police station.

According to police officials, Prashanth, who was unmarried, lived in the house with his parents, grandmother, and brother-in-law. His mother worked at a garment factory, his grandmother was a municipal worker, and his brother-in-law was a plumber who resided in the same household.

The incident occurred in the morning when Prashanth’s father, Chikkanna, was away at work. Police said Prashanth attacked the victims inside the house, fatally injuring all three.

Hearing the commotion, neighbours rushed to the house, managed to restrain Prashanth, and locked him inside a room. However, before the police could reach the spot, he allegedly died by suicide inside the room.

“We have initiated an investigation into the incident,” a police officer said.

Prashanth’s father said there had been occasional minor arguments between his son and his mother, but nothing unusual had been observed prior to the incident. “Everything was fine this morning when I left for work. I don’t know why he did this. I don’t know if he would have killed me too if I had been at home,” he said.

Yatish, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Division), said preliminary inputs from neighbours suggest that Prashanth may have been dealing with mental health issues. “We are verifying the same,” he added.
