Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa wrote to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Sunday, requesting a joint resolution in the Punjab Assembly to recommend former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the Bharat Ratna.

Bajwa suggested the resolution in recognition of Singh’s "monumental contributions" to India’s progress and his "exemplary service."

Bajwa also reached out to BJP leader Ashwani Sharma, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali, and BSP MLA Nachhatar Pal, urging them to form an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support Singh’s Bharat Ratna nomination.

Singh, who passed away on December 26 at the age of 92, was known as the architect of India’s economic reforms. In his letter, Bajwa highlighted Singh’s role in India’s 1991 economic liberalisation, which set the stage for the nation’s growth, resilience, and improved global standing.

He emphasised that Singh's commitment to the nation and ability to bring together diverse political factions made him a unifying force in Indian politics.

Bajwa proposed that the resolution be passed on the first day the Assembly reconvenes, formally recommending the Bharat Ratna for Singh. This recognition would celebrate his extraordinary contributions and reaffirm the country’s commitment to democracy, integrity, and excellence in public service.

Bajwa concluded by urging support for the initiative, emphasising that it was not only a recognition of Singh’s achievements but also a message of unity and dedication to the values of democracy and service to the nation.
