In a significant diplomatic engagement, newly appointed High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, Riyaz Hamidullah, paid a courtesy visit to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna on Monday. The 15-minute meeting was described as warm and cordial.
According to a statement from the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh in Kolkata, the Chief Minister expressed a strong desire to further deepen the traditional relationship between the people on both sides of the border. She stressed that the linguistic, cultural and spiritual bonds shared by Bengal and Bangladesh transcend economic or commercial considerations.

During the meeting, Mamata also requested the High Commissioner to convey her greetings to Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and to the people of Bangladesh, reaffirming her goodwill toward the neighbouring nation.
This was Riyaz Hamidullah’s first official courtesy call on any Indian Chief Minister since taking charge as High Commissioner. Banerjee reiterated her intention to sustain close contact and cooperation with Bangladesh in the future.
