Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed significant concern over the escalating situation in Bangladesh, highlighting the potential repercussions for northeastern states.

Speaking to mediapersons on Wednesday in Dergaon, Sarma warned that the turmoil could lead to the neighboring country once again becoming a haven for insurgents, thereby increasing illegal immigration into the region.

Sarma underscored the urgency of protecting the India-Bangladesh border, stating that if unrest persists in Bangladesh, it could adversely affect the northeastern states from multiple angles.

“We are concerned about the recent developments in Bangladesh, and if the trouble continues, we fear that it will affect the region,” he remarked, highlighting the need for vigilance along the border.

During the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the northeastern insurgents were largely forced to vacate Bangladeshi territory, a development that contributed to a reduction in extremist activities in the region.

Sarma acknowledged this collaboration, asserting, “There is no doubt that with the cooperation of the previous Bangladesh government, we have been successful in curbing extremist activities in Northeast India.”

With the recent political upheaval following Hasina’s resignation amid violent protests, Sarma is hopeful that the newly appointed interim government under Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus will continue this cooperative approach.

“I have full confidence that the new government in the neighboring country will also maintain this cooperation,” he stated.

As the death toll from the anti-government protests in Bangladesh rose to 440, according to local media reports, the army is reportedly working to restore order in the violence-stricken nation.

Sarma reiterated the necessity of dialogue between India and Bangladesh to address the security concerns of the northeastern states effectively.

The chief minister conveyed optimism regarding the central government’s ability to safeguard regional interests, asserting, “We are sure that under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the concerns of the Northeast will be addressed, and Bangladesh will not become a safe haven for insurgents again.”

In a reflective moment, Sarma shared his thoughts on the future of Assam, posting on social media platform X (formerly Twitter): “In these uncertain times, as we guard our borders with Bangladesh, my mind often turns to the Assam of the future—2041.”

He expressed a desire for strength and patience to navigate the present challenges, with a hope that today’s efforts would lay the foundation for a brighter tomorrow, emphasizing the importance of protecting the region’s religion and culture.
