Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday revealed that he presented a detailed report on the situation in Bangladesh during the recent plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC).
The session, held on 21 December in Agartala, witnessed the participation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Addressing a press conference, Saha noted that deliberations covered issues critical to Bangladesh’s current scenario, particularly its border dynamics with India.
Bangladesh shares a 4,096-km international boundary with India, of which 1,879 km lies along four northeastern states: Tripura (856 km), Mizoram (318 km), Meghalaya (443 km), and Assam (318 km).
“I have presented a report on the situation in Bangladesh and mentioned details of barbed wire fencing, and the strength of BSF, CRPF and police. I also place our demands which need to be done," said Saha.
Terming the NEC plenary meeting a success, the Chief Minister highlighted the emphasis placed on inter-state coordination by governors and chief ministers of the northeastern states.
Responding to criticism from Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Asish Kumar Saha, who had questioned the benefits of the plenary session, the Chief Minister defended the discussions.
"The deliberations were beneficial for Tripura," he asserted.
Beyond the plenary, multiple events were conducted in Agartala, including a bankers’ conference, a national conference of cooperatives, and a meeting of the North East Space Application Centre (NESAC), which was attended by ISRO chairman S. Somanath.
Of particular significance was Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the Bru resettlement village in Dhalai district. Shah personally reviewed the implementation of essential services such as Anganwadi centres, drinking water, electricity, and LPG connections.
“Most importantly, the Union home minister had personally visited the Bru resettlement village to see the level of implementation of a programme for such people. It was a great exercise," stated Saha.
The rehabilitation of over 37,500 Bru tribals, displaced by ethnic violence in Mizoram during the late 1990s and 2009, has been a landmark initiative.
The Union Home Ministry has allocated ₹821 crore for their resettlement in Tripura.
Saha criticised the Congress for its remarks on Shah’s statement about B.R. Ambedkar, accusing the party of hypocrisy.
“It was the Congress who had insulted Baba Saheb Ambedkar. Now, they are shedding crocodile tears. They should seek an apology for giving ill-treatment to the architect of the country's Constitution," he said.
