Police in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have launched an anonymous helpline number to track notorious drug peddlers and organised crime syndicates operating in the district, officials said on Thursday.
According to officials, the helpline was launched under the ‘Nasha Mukt Abhiyan’ mission recently launched across the country, under which police and security agencies have been directed to act against drug peddlers to make Jammu and Kashmir drug-free.
The drug problem has already worsened, with more than 1.3 million out of the 15 million population reported to be under the influence of narcotics or other substance abuse.
An official, while interacting with the media on Thursday, said the helpline number — 95967-67701 — will remain under the personal supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Baramulla.
As these activities have risen across Kashmir, especially among young adults and teenagers beyond class and affiliation, the situation remains alarming, though under control.
Meanwhile, police have sought public cooperation in dealing with such issues, stating that anyone with information related to narcotics can share it directly on the number without disclosing their identity.
“Appropriate action will be taken on every input received,” a police officer said, urging citizens to come forward and cooperate in making the district drug-free.
