An incident involving the alleged sexual assault and murder of a 12-year-old girl has triggered widespread unrest in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district, while also setting off a sharp political confrontation in West Bengal.

According to reports, the minor’s body was recovered from a local pond on Sunday morning, leading to outrage among residents. The victim’s family, along with locals, staged a road blockade with the body, demanding justice and swift action against those responsible. The situation quickly escalated, with protests turning violent in parts of the area.

Amid the unrest, a 26-year-old man identified as Indrajit Tanti was allegedly beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of involvement in the crime.

Although police intervened and rushed him to a hospital, he was declared dead on arrival. Incidents of vandalism were also reported, including damage to a police vehicle. Authorities have confirmed that one accused has been arrested in connection with the case.

The incident has taken a political turn following claims by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that she was prevented from visiting the victim’s family. Banerjee alleged that a heavy police deployment outside her Kalighat residence effectively confined her indoors.

Expressing her anger during a brief social media appearance, she questioned the administration’s actions, saying, “I am alone now. Why are you so afraid of me?” She further raised concerns over the sudden presence of central forces, including CRPF and RPF personnel, in her neighborhood despite no reports of unrest in the area.

Banerjee stated that she had spoken to the victim’s family over the phone and intended to visit them personally to offer support. However, she claimed the situation changed rapidly with her residence being surrounded by security personnel.

The state administration has not yet issued an official response to these allegations.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have dismissed Banerjee’s claims. State BJP chief spokesperson Debjit Sarkar accused the Trinamool Congress of staging “drama” to remain politically relevant. He pointed out that Banerjee already receives Z-plus security and questioned the basis of her allegations, stating that no authority had explicitly barred her from stepping out.

The sudden security deployment in Kalighat has fueled speculation in political circles, with sections of the opposition alleging that the move amounted to an informal house arrest.
