Bathinda Police have nabbed two alleged drug-traffickers and seized 6.5 km of opium that was smuggled from Rajasthan, officials said.

SP City Narinder Singh said, “Bathinda Police achieved success in the Punjab government's ongoing anti-drug campaign. A checkpoint was set in front of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Technical University, where we intercepted two individuals travelling in a Swift car. During the search, four kilograms of opium was recovered from them. We registered Case No 39 at Canal Colony Police Station. The two individuals involved in this case, Jagsir Singh Seera and Mahendra Singh, were arrested. Later, an additional 2.5 kg of opium was also recovered on the basis of information given by Jagsir. We have produced them in court and obtained a three-day police remand."

The officer said during questioning, the accused admitted they had sourced the opium from Rajasthan and supplied it in Bathinda as well as nearby districts. Six NDPS Act cases are already registered against Jagsir Singh Seera. He is serving a 10-year sentence in two cases and had been released on bail in September 2024. Police said he resumed drug-trafficking after his release.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has announced the setting up of a dedicated State Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) Police Station in Rajpura, Patiala district. The specialised unit will have statewide jurisdiction and is aimed at strengthening action against gangster networks across Punjab.

In a separate case, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police busted a cross-border narco-smuggling network and arrested two operatives. Police also recovered ₹21,800, believed to be drug money.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said in a post on his social media handle that in a major breakthrough, police seized 7 kg 630 grams of heroin and apprehended two accused. He added that initial probe revealed that the accused were in touch with a Dubai-based handler through virtual numbers, who coordinated cross-border consignments and guided pickup and supply routes.
