West Bengal has recorded a significant rise in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections, offering an early boost to the state’s finances under the new government. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who recently claimed a surge in state revenue, disclosed detailed figures.
According to official data of the State Finance Department, GST collections in July stood at Rs 5,564 crore, marking a notable increase from Rs 5,082 crore in June. This reflects a month-on-month rise of Rs 482 crore within just the second month of the BJP government’s tenure.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the state’s revenue has grown substantially since the government assumed office, stating that overall earnings have increased by 12 percent in just 10 weeks. The latest GST figures appear to reinforce this claim, pointing to improving financial health of the state exchequer.
Officials attribute the growth to a combination of stricter enforcement measures and increased economic activity. Over the past few months, the administration has intensified its crackdown on tax evasion, strengthened monitoring of e-way bills, and launched campaigns encouraging traders to comply with tax regulations.
A senior finance department official said efforts to improve transparency and curb fake billing practices have played a key role. “Enhanced surveillance and rising market demand have together contributed to the increase in GST collections. We expect this upward trend to continue, especially with the festive season approaching,” the official said.
Economic analysts have also described the rise in GST revenue as a positive indicator of broader economic momentum. Since GST collections are closely tied to business transactions and consumer spending, the July figures suggest an uptick in both production and market activity across the state. Experts also believe the change in government may have improved investor sentiment.
GST remains one of the primary sources of the state’s own revenue. Higher collections ease pressure on the exchequer and enable the government to allocate more funds toward welfare schemes and infrastructure development.
With the festive season, including Durga Puja, around the corner, market activity is expected to pick up further. Analysts and officials alike remain optimistic that GST collections could reach even higher levels in the coming months.
