Junior doctors in West Bengal began a march to the CBI office in Salt Lake on Friday, demanding justice for the rape-murder of a colleague at the state-run RG Kar hospital last month. The march follows the doctors' announcement of a partial withdrawal of their 'cease work' after 41 days of protests.
On Thursday, the junior doctors declared a partial resumption of duties, stating they would attend to essential services in state-run hospitals starting Saturday. This decision marked the end of a 10-day sit-in protest near the state health department headquarters, known as ‘Swasthya Bhawan’.
The procession from their protest site to the CGO Complex, approximately 4 km, aimed to press for a swift conclusion to the investigation. “If the assurances and promises are not fulfilled, we will again start our agitation programme,” a protesting doctor stated.
While the medics have committed to providing emergency and essential services, they have decided not to work in the Outpatient Department (OPD).
