Fulfilling a key electoral promise, the West Bengal government on Monday launched a free travel service for women on all state-run buses, marking a significant step in its public welfare initiatives. Effective from June 1, women across the state can now travel without paying any fare on government-operated buses.
The scheme applies to all categories of buses run by state transport corporations, including WBTC, NBSTC, and SBSTC. It covers both short-distance city routes and long-distance inter-district journeys, offering relief to working women, students, homemakers, and senior citizens alike.
According to officials, the initiative aims to reduce daily commuting expenses and improve accessibility to education, employment, and social opportunities for women. The government expects the scheme to encourage greater use of public transport among female passengers.
To avail of the service, women must present a valid identity document to obtain a special card. Accepted documents include Aadhaar Card, Voter ID (EPIC), Rural Employment Job Card, Ayushman Bharat Health Card, Driving License, PAN Card, Passport, pension documents with photographs, or institutional ID cards issued by educational institutions. A recent passport-sized photograph is also required during the application process.
Until the official card is issued, beneficiaries will be provided with a “zero-fare” ticket by bus conductors upon verification of documents. These tickets will mention the passenger’s boarding and destination points but will not require any payment.
The Transport Department has displayed notices at bus terminals and stops detailing the necessary documentation. Drivers and conductors have also undergone specialised training to ensure smooth implementation of the scheme.
On the inaugural day, BJP state General Secretary Shashi Agnihotri inspected the rollout and praised the initiative. He expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, noting that the scheme has created a “festive atmosphere” among women. He also emphasised the need to increase the number of buses in the coming days to accommodate rising demand.
Early reactions from women across the state have been overwhelmingly positive. Many believe the savings on transportation will allow them to better manage household expenses.
Officials from the Transport Department stated that the scheme is expected to significantly enhance women's participation in various sectors while strengthening the state’s public transport system.
