A man brutally gouged out another man's eyes during a violent altercation in the wee hours of Thursday at Dum Dum in Kolkata, after which he was brutally lynched by a mob.

 

The incident began when Pradeep Sarkar, a local described by witnesses as a habitual drinker, was wandering in an intoxicated state. Reports said that he stumbled and fell against the door of another local, identified as Gokul Mandal's house.

The seemingly minor incident quickly escalated into a horrific act of violence.

 

Gokul rushed out of his house and accused Pradeep of looking at his wife indecently.

 

“A heated argument ensued, spiraling out of control within moments. In a fit of rage, Gokul allegedly pinned Pradeep to the ground, sat on his chest, and shockingly gouged out both of his eyes with his bare hands. The savage act left the locals in a state of horror and disbelief,” said a police officer.

 

The sheer brutality of the attack provoked the nearby residents, who gathered in large numbers. “Overwhelmed by anger, the mob turned on Gokul, beating him mercilessly. By the time we arrived at the scene, Gokul was lying unconscious. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” said the officer.

 

Meanwhile, Pradeep was also taken to the hospital in critical condition. Medical officials stated that it is still uncertain if his eyesight can be restored, given the severity of the injuries.

 

According to residents, Pradeep had a reputation for causing disturbances under the influence of alcohol and was allegedly known for inappropriate behavior towards women in the area. Gokul’s accusation that Pradeep was leering at his wife seems to have been the catalyst for the violent outburst.

 

However, the brutal manner in which Gokul retaliated has left the community shocked and horrified. “We have never seen anything like this before. No matter what the issue was, nobody deserves such a fate,” said a local shopkeeper who witnessed the aftermath.

 

The Dum Dum Police Station has initiated a detailed investigation into the incident. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity and recording statements from witnesses to understand the sequence of events leading up to the attack.

 

The police have also appealed to the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and have assured that justice will be served following a thorough investigation.
