West Bengal witnessed grand Christmas celebrations on Wednesday, with joyous fervour and festive cheer enveloping the state. Churches were thronged by devotees attending prayer services that reflected on the birth and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Decorative lights adorned homes in Christian-majority areas such as Kolkata, Krishnanagar, Baruipur, and Alipurduar, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Community feasts and cultural programmes marked the festivities in these regions.
Meanwhile, other parts of the state celebrated the day in diverse ways. Families and friends enjoyed picnics, outings, and meals at popular restaurants.
Kolkata's Eco Park, Alipore Zoo, Victoria Memorial, and Nicco Park recorded overwhelming footfall, with queues forming early in the morning.
An official reported that the Alipore Zoo alone attracted 69,152 visitors. On Park Street, the city’s bustling culinary hub, restaurants and bars were packed throughout the day, especially during lunch hours.
Picnic spots and tourist destinations, including Mukutmanipur in Bankura, Santiniketan in Birbhum, Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas, Ayodhya Hills in Purulia, Gajaldoba in Jalpaiguri, Garchumuk in Howrah, and Digha and Mandarmani in Purba Medinipur, witnessed large gatherings.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee joined the midnight mass at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary and lauded Bengal’s inclusivity during the festive season.
"What makes Bengal truly extraordinary is that 'unity in diversity' isn't just an ideal we cherish; it's the very soul of who we are. This spirit of togetherness resonates deeply during the festive season," she remarked.
She added, "May the light of Christmas fill your hearts with warmth and your homes with joy. May you and your loved ones be graced with the Almighty's choicest blessings."
Leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP also extended his greetings, saying, "Christmas greetings to those who are celebrating."
To ensure safety during the celebrations, elaborate security measures were implemented across the state. In Kolkata alone, around 2,000 police personnel
were deployed, and eleven watchtowers were erected for effective monitoring.
