Actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty, who recently received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, made a bold statement on Sunday, declaring that the “masnad” (throne) of West Bengal would belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party after the 2026 assembly polls.
Speaking at the launch of a BJP membership drive in Kolkata, where he was felicitated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chakraborty vowed to “do everything to achieve the goal.”
The event, held at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, marked the start of a BJP campaign aiming to enrol one crore new members in the state by 30 November.
Chakraborty, who actively campaigned for the BJP in the recent Lok Sabha polls, expressed disappointment over the party’s dip in seats — from 18 in 2019 to 12 in 2024.
“In 2026, the masnad will be ours, and we will do everything to achieve the goal,” he said, addressing party functionaries.
The actor emphasised the importance of grassroots efforts in the upcoming polls, urging booth-level BJP workers to resist any attempts at voter intimidation.
He added that he would rejoin the membership drive in West Bengal in November to further support the party’s outreach.
