A teenage girl allegedly died by suicide after jumping into a canal in Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli district, reportedly after being scolded by her mother for spending time making social media reels, police said.

The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when local residents spotted a girl's body floating in a canal near Godhana village. They immediately alerted the police, following which a team of officers reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.

According to the police, the deceased was a resident of Lewa Mod village in Chandauli district. She had recently travelled to the neighbouring Mirzapur district to visit her maternal grandparents.

During the preliminary investigation, police found that the teenager had been making social media reels when her mother reportedly reprimanded her. According to investigators, the mother advised her daughter to reduce her use of social media and stop making videos, after which the girl became emotionally distressed.

Police suspect that following the argument, the teenager left the house and allegedly jumped into a canal near her maternal grandparents' village. Her body was carried downstream by the water before being found near a bridge in Godhana village under the Alinagar police station area of Chandauli district. Investigators said they established the girl's identity during the course of the inquiry and subsequently informed her family, who reached the spot after being contacted by the police.

Speaking about the incident, senior police officer Arun Kumar Singh said the police received information about the body of a young woman lying in the canal. A police team was immediately dispatched to the location, where the body was recovered and an investigation was launched.

Police have registered the case and said all aspects of the incident are being thoroughly examined. Officials are working to establish the exact sequence of events leading up to the death, and statements of family members are also being recorded as part of the investigation.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death. Police said further legal proceedings will be initiated based on the findings of the investigation and the post-mortem report, which is awaited.
