Dreaded gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria was produced in a Batala Court on Thursday amid tight security after being brought to Punjab from Silchar Jail in Assam on a production warrant. The court has ordered his three-day police remand for further interrogation.
Punjab Police teams had escorted Bhagwanpuria to the Amritsar airport late on Wednesday night before taking him to Batala. He is in the custody of the Batala police in connection with the Gora Baryar murder case.
Gurpreet Singh Gora, alias Gora Baryar, a resident of Baryar village of Gurdaspur, was shot dead on May 26, while gangster Billa Mandiala narrowly escaped the attack. The Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) arrested one Nelson Masih for the murder, who confessed that he worked for the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang. Though Gora Baryar had no direct link with the Bambiha gang, the group later issued a threat on the social media, vowing to avenge his death.
The police suspect that Gora Baryar’s murder triggered a cycle of revenge killings, leading to the murder of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria’s mother Harjit Kaur (52) and her associate Karanveer Singh (29) on June 26 in Batala’s Urban Estate area. The Ghanshyampuria gang, allegedly working in coordination with the Bambiha gang, claimed responsibility for the murders, calling it a retaliation for Gora Baryar’s killing.
Later, the Bambiha gang distanced itself from the killings through a social media post, saying, “What happened to Mata Ji was wrong. Every mother is sacred. The target was only Karanveer.”
The police said they had sought Bhagwanpuria’s remand to question him about Gora Baryar’s murder, the subsequent gang warfare and his role in recent criminal conspiracies.
