With the water level in the Bhakra Dam reaching its maximum capacity, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) decided to release water in a controlled manner on Tuesday.
As per a schedule issued by the Senior Design Engineer, Water Regulation, BBMB, Nangal, the floodgates of the dam were opened gradually from 3 pm. While in the first phase, the flood gates were opened by 1 foot, water was released by 2 feet in the second phase at 4 pm. In the third phase at 5 pm, up to 3 feet of water was released.
The BBMB administration has directed officials to strictly follow the plan to ensure that the process of water release remains safe and smooth. As per BBMB records, the water level of the Bhakra Dam stood at 1,665.06 feet at 6 am on Tuesday as against its normal storage capacity of 1,680 feet.
The authorities have issued warnings to residents of the Bela region, which falls inside the Sutlej riverbed, and those living along the riverbanks to stay away from low-lying areas in the wake of the water release exercise.
