Bharat Dev Varma, scion of the erstwhile royal family of Tripura and husband to actress Moon Moon Sen, passed away in Kolkata on Tuesday. He was en route to the hospital but tragically succumbed in the ambulance before arrival.
A descendant of Tripura's royal lineage, Bharat was the son of Ila Devi, a princess of Cooch Behar and the elder sister of Gayatri Devi, the Maharani of Jaipur.
His maternal grandmother, Indira, was the only daughter of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad III of Vadodara.
Bharat Dev Varma married actress Moon Moon Sen in 1978, blending two prominent bloodlines. Moon Moon Sen, the daughter of legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, herself hails from a prestigious family, with her great-grandfather, Dinanath Sen, serving as the Diwan to the Maharaja of Tripura.
Following their marriage, Moon Moon Sen entered the film industry, debuting in the 1984 film Andar Baahar.
Her career spanned over 60 films and 40 television series, earning her accolades including the Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Their daughters, Raima and Riya Sen, have followed in their mother's footsteps, establishing themselves in the Bollywood and Bengali film industries.
Tripura's former Deputy Chief Minister and current Telangana Governor, Jishnu Dev Varma, Bharat’s younger brother, paid his respects to his sibling in Kolkata on Tuesday.
Bharat Dev Varma’s passing marks the end of an era for a family that was deeply entrenched in both India’s royal and cinematic history. His legacy will be remembered fondly for generations.
