Tensions about speeding motorcyclists in the Jehangirabad district of Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal triggered a violent clash between two communities in Bhopal on Tuesday, injuring at least six people, according to officials.
Starting as a minor argument, the incident turned into a fully fledged conflict with members from both sides flashing swords and throwing stones. The incident happened in Jahangirabad's Old Grain Market area, which is home to both Muslim and Sikh communities.
Tensions reportedly began on December 22, when Faiz, a member of the Muslim community in the area, allegedly drove dangerously down a Sikh-dominated street. According to authorities, amid the dispute, Faiz allegedly stabbed a Sikh man with a vegetable cart knife.
Faiz, along with two others, was detained after a case was filed against them. "Two days ago, there was a fight about speeding motorcycles, which resulted in an FIR. Five people were named as accused, three of whom were detained right away, while the other two are still at large. "Our police team is actively looking for them," DCP Zone-1 Priyanka Shukla said.
Tensions rose on Tuesday, when members of the Sikh community allegedly attacked Michael, a member from the Muslim community. This sparked extensive rioting in the surrounding area, including stone-throwing and the pulling out of swords.
Several Muslim homes in the area were targeted during the standoff.
Attempts were made to mediate between the two communities, and Sikh community representatives later met at a Gurudwara to address the event. Authorities have subsequently brought the situation under control, although tensions remain high in the area.
The police are conducting a thorough investigation and have urged all residents to maintain peace and avoid communal conflicts.
