Suspended Punjab DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, accused in a ₹5 lakh bribery case and for allegedly amassing assets worth crores beyond his known sources of income, was remanded to five days in CBI custody by a Chandigarh court on Saturday.
The CBI had sought Bhullar’s remand to trace the sources of his disproportionate assets. Despite opposition from Bhullar’s lawyers, the court accepted the agency’s argument that further investigation and collection of evidence against Bhullar were necessary.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has also moved a Mohali court, seeking Bhullar’s custody in a separate disproportionate assets case. However, the CBI opposed the Vigilance plea, arguing that the Bureau could question Bhullar in jail if required. The court will hear the Vigilance Bureau’s petition on November 3.
During the hearing, Bhullar became emotional upon seeing his daughter in the courtroom. Before being taken back to the holding cell, he briefly hugged her and spoke to her.
The CBI claims that Bhullar failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the massive gap between his known income and accumulated wealth.
