Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan visited Gujarat’s iconic Statue of Unity and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on Monday, as part of their official tour to India.
The 182-metre tall Statue of Unity, located on a small island in the Narmada River near the Sardar Sarovar Dam, is a tribute to India's first Deputy Prime Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, revered as the Iron Man of India.
The monument is the tallest statue in the world and serves as a significant symbol of India's unity and heritage.
According to a state government release, the Bhutanese dignitaries, dressed in traditional attire, were visibly impressed by the colossal structure.
They were welcomed by state protocol minister Jagdish Vishwakarma and other senior officials at the Statue of Unity premises.
During their visit, a guide provided detailed accounts of India's struggle for independence and Sardar Patel's pivotal role in the country's unification.
The dignitaries ascended to the statue's viewing gallery, situated at a height of 153 metres, offering a panoramic view of the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the surrounding landscape.
The visit also included a tour of the Sardar Sarovar Dam, where the delegation was briefed on its critical role in addressing Gujarat’s water scarcity issues.
The dam is a key infrastructure project that supports irrigation, water supply, and hydroelectric power generation in the region.
In the visitor's book, King Namgyel Wangchuk wrote, "Our best wishes to India," reflecting the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.
