The Bihar government has approved a massive rural road infrastructure project worth over Rs 17,000 crore, aiming to enhance connectivity across the state. The approval was granted during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, marking a significant boost for rural development.
Following the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat Department, S. Siddharth, briefed reporters on the scope of the initiative. He confirmed that the cabinet had sanctioned 37 major projects under the rural works division, covering all 37 districts of Bihar.
“These projects include the construction and maintenance of 11,251 rural roads, spanning a total length of 19,876 kilometers. The total expenditure approved for this initiative is Rs 17,266 crore,” Siddharth stated.
District-wise breakdown of key projects
The ambitious road construction plan will be implemented across multiple districts, with Madhubani set to receive the highest number of roads. According to official data:
- Madhubani will see the construction of 706 new roads, covering a total length of 1,237 km, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,221 crore.
- Aurangabad will have 576 roads, but with the longest combined stretch of 1,252 km, costing Rs 1,125 crore.
- Gaya will witness the development of 629 roads, extending 1,241 km, with a budget allocation of Rs 936 crore.
- Muzaffarpur is also a major beneficiary, with 614 roads covering 993 km, requiring an investment of Rs 733 crore.

The state government’s decision to approve such a large-scale infrastructure push is expected to significantly improve rural connectivity, facilitate economic growth, and provide better access to essential services for millions of residents.
