Five assembly constituencies in Bihar are set for bypolls following vacancies caused by legislators moving to contest in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
The seat in Rupauli was vacated by Bima Bharti, who resigned as JD(U) MLA to join RJD and contest from Purnea. Voting for the Rupauli bypoll is scheduled for July 10.
Among the remaining four constituencies, Mahagathbandhan secured victories in three — Ramgarh (RJD), Belaganj (RJD), and Tarari (CPI-ML) — during the 2020 Assembly elections.
RJD's Sudhakar Singh, MLA from Ramgarh, won the Lok Sabha election in Buxar. Surendra Yadav, MLA from Belaganj, also emerged victorious in Jahanabad, while CPI-ML's Sudama Prasad, MLA from Tarari, won the Arrah Lok Sabha seat.
Hindustani Awam Morcha-Secular (HAM-S) leader and Imamganj MLA Jitan Ram Manjhi won the Gaya Lok Sabha seat.
It is expected that RJD will nominate Sudhakar Singh’s younger brother, Ajit Singh, for the Ramgarh bypoll. Ajit Singh, formerly with JD(U), is being considered. In Belaganj, a seat dominated by Yadavs, Surendra Yadav’s son Vishwanath Yadav is preparing to contest on an RJD ticket.
Sources in Mahagathbandhan suggest that CPI-ML will likely field a candidate again in Tarari, as in 2020.
For Imamganj, speculations point to Jitan Ram Manjhi’s younger son, Praveen Manjhi, as a potential candidate.
RJD spokesperson Mritunjay Tiwari expressed confidence in Mahagathbandhan's prospects, stating they expect to win all five seats in the bypolls.
"RJD is always prepared for elections," Tiwari said. "Four Bihar Legislative Assembly members have won Lok Sabha elections this time, with three from the INDIA bloc."
In response BJP spokesperson Arvind Kumar Singh has said that no one can claim a stronghold on any seat.
“In a democracy, the people have the power and they are with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar because of their development works. The NDA will win all five seats of the bypolls and there is no doubt about it,” he added.
