One of his accomplices managed to escape into a nearby forest, and search operations are currently underway to apprehend him,” said a police officer.

Lallan Singh, a notorious criminal from Bihar carrying a reward of Rs 1.25 lakh, was killed in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district early Monday morning, police said. The encounter took place on the Sarsawa-Nakur road when a police team conducting routine checks noticed suspicious movement. When officers attempted to stop and question the suspects, they were allegedly fired upon, prompting retaliatory action.

“During the exchange of fire, Lallan sustained critical gunshot injuries. He was rushed to the Community Health Centre in Sarsawa and later referred to a district hospital, where doctors declared him dead. One of his accomplices managed to escape into a nearby forest, and search operations are currently underway to apprehend him,” said a police officer.

Senior Superintendent of Police Abhinandan Singh said Lallan was a resident of Anandgolva village in Bihar’s Samastipur district and had long been on the radar of law enforcement agencies in both Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

A reward of Rs 1 lakh had been announced by the Varanasi Police Commissionerate and Rs 25,000 by the Chandauli Police for his arrest. He had been absconding for several years despite extensive efforts by multiple police teams.

According to police records, Lallan was involved in at least 13 criminal cases, including murder, dacoity, robbery, extortion, and attacks on police personnel. He was also wanted in connection with the killings of seven individuals, including two police sub-inspectors, a bank cashier, and a private security guard.

He had gained notoriety following a 2022 incident in Varanasi in which he allegedly shot a sub-inspector and fled with the officer’s service pistol, after which he was placed on the ‘most wanted’ list.

Police officials said Lallan operated an organised criminal network spanning multiple districts across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, often working with his brothers and other gang members. He was known for frequently changing hideouts and meticulously planning his crimes, which made his arrest difficult.

Officials believe that his death will significantly weaken the criminal network he led. The encounter is being seen as a major success for the police, sending a strong message against organised crime in the region.

Further investigation into the encounter is underway, and authorities are working to document all aspects of the operation.
